Le Cesarine

A celebration of flavour: the result of a lifelong passion for cooking

Grosseto / Toscana

La Cesarina

Giovanna welcomes us into her house in Grosseto, a city that is full of history and ancient monuments just a few miles from the coast. Our Cesarina works in HR and is a proud mother of two. She has been a passionate cook for many years, and has a chef’s diploma – she’s even taken part in cooking talent competitions on TV.

For her Taste Experience, Giovanna prepares some classic favourites from her local cuisine; strawberry jam, spicy fig preserve, and polenta with lard and cavolo nero. Get ready for a fabulous display of colour and flavour.

The secret of the Cesarina

My secret ingredient for the perfect roast potatoes is a pinch of curry powder!

  • Tuscan starter: mixed crostini, cold cuts and pecorino cheese D.O.C. with preserves and honey
  • Polenta with cavolo nero and 'lardo di colonnata' (cured salami)
  • Duck breast with fruits of the forest
  • Crunchy countryside potatoes
  • Vanila cream and pine nut tart

Refined selection of local wines

We begin our Taste Experience with an antipasto platter, with a selection of crostini, typical local salami and Pecorino DOP cheese. The delicious flavours are complemented by sweet honey, strawberry jam, delicately spicy fig preserve and Morellino di Scansano, a classic red wine from the area. To follow, our Cesarina serves a hearty first course of polenta with cavolo nero and lardo di Colonnata, a typical local sausage.

For the second course, we have a perfectly succulent duck breast with fruits of the forest. The fruits’ balance of sweetness and tartness is the perfect marriage for the duck’s delicate flavour. On the side we have crispy countryside roast potatoes, which are kicked up a notch with a scattering of breadcrumbs and a pinch of curry powder.

To round off the Taste Experience, Giovanna prepares a pastry tart with a rich vanilla cream filling. A scattering of pine nuts adds a distinctive touch to this truly indulgent dessert.

Our customers says

"This was one our best experiences in Bologna. Our hosts, Gianni and Lorenza, were a well travelled and interesting couple about similar ages to ourselves. They also spoke perfect English, having lived in Canada for many years. Gianni taught us how to make tortellini from scratch which we ate with our meal. Gianni is a fine and the rest of the meal was excellent. Their place is an apartment in a medieval Palazzo which was well worth seeing on its own. We really enjoyed it."

J. Bliss

"Our dinner with Angela was the best experience of our visit to Rome. The food was delicious, and it was delightful to talk with Angela and her Mother about food, life in Rome, work, and the state of the world in general. This experience would have been impossible for us without Le Cesarine."

"We had a wonderfull lunch time with Tania (30 minutes outside from Bologna). She was an excellent host and very charming. We enjoyed her traditional courses (antipasti, strozzapretti con salsiccia, brasato al limone) very much and could highly recommend her. The atmosphere was very relaxed and it was easy to drive to her. We would come again."
