Le Cesarine

Discovering Campania cuisine: a journey through time

Meta / Campania

La Cesarina

Assunta welcomes us in an authentic "paradise on earth". How else to describe Meta, a small town of the Sorrento peninsula overlooking the Gulf of Naples: green hills planted with walnut and olive trees that descend to the turquoise sea and, in the distance, the silhouette of the island of Ischia.

Our Cesarina's dishes sum up the heart of this land. Getting in the kitchen, for Assunta, means diving into family tradition and local history. An example? The sweet and sour dishes, which Assunta has rediscovered collecting and experimenting with almost-forgotten recipes.

The secret of the Cesarina
I want to investigate the past to rediscover the flavors of these lands

  • 'Sgagliuozzi' of Naples
  • 'Marinata' soup (‘mmaritata, literally: 'marinated soup')
  • Tracchiulelle (spare ribs), pork chops and meatballs
  • Escarole with raisins and pine nuts
  • Tagliolini pasta tart
  • Bite sized nougat pieces
  • Homemade liqueurs

Refined selection of local wines

The Neapolitan 'sgagliuozzi' are a recurring dish in Neapolitan cuisine, and even today, you'll find them in most kitchens in Campania. Assunta serves these crispy triangles of fried polenta as a starter, opening a taste Experience that is dedicated to the culinary wonders of the region. Next, a hearty first course of maritata soup, a comforting feast of meat and vegetables that is slow-cooked for many hours.

For the second course, pork chops and meatballs served with typical 'tracchiulelle', pork ribs cooked according to local tradition. This selection of local meat that our is accompanied by 'escarole', a raisin and pine nut salad that is a perfect balance of sweet and savoury.

Finally, dessert. Starting with a sweet 'pasta tart' followed by home-made nougat, a much-loved sweet of the Neapolitan culture. Then, to see the evening off, an assortment of Assunta's special home-made liqueurs - a perfect finish!

Our customers says

"This was one our best experiences in Bologna. Our hosts, Gianni and Lorenza, were a well travelled and interesting couple about similar ages to ourselves. They also spoke perfect English, having lived in Canada for many years. Gianni taught us how to make tortellini from scratch which we ate with our meal. Gianni is a fine and the rest of the meal was excellent. Their place is an apartment in a medieval Palazzo which was well worth seeing on its own. We really enjoyed it."

"Our dinner with Angela was the best experience of our visit to Rome. The food was delicious, and it was delightful to talk with Angela and her Mother about food, life in Rome, work, and the state of the world in general. This experience would have been impossible for us without Le Cesarine."

"We had a wonderfull lunch time with Tania (30 minutes outside from Bologna). She was an excellent host and very charming. We enjoyed her traditional courses (antipasti, strozzapretti con salsiccia, brasato al limone) very much and could highly recommend her. The atmosphere was very relaxed and it was easy to drive to her. We would come again."
