Le Cesarine

Experience Bologna's traditional food and wine

Bologna / Emilia Romagna

La Cesarina

Mara's house looks out over the main entrance of Bologna's most famous park, the nineteenth-century Giardini Margherita, just a stone's throw away from the city's historic centre. It is a beautiful and picturesque area, where you can either choose to explore the calm lawns of the park, or wander through the crisp air of Via Santo Stefano's porticoed streets.

When Mara was a little girl, she loved to watch her aunt, who was a renowned cook and hostess in a town near Bologna. Over time, Mara learned the culinary secrets that had been passed down through the generations of her family. Today she is passionately dedicated to researching and developing typical dishes from the Emilia region.

The secret of the Cesarina
I closely guard my recipe for Grandmother’s memorable meatballs

  • Crescenta with cured ham
  • Egg gramigna with sausage sauce
  • Zucchini parmigiana
  • Seasonal salad
  • Chocolate salami

Refined selection of local wines

Mara's Taste Experience begins with a starter of 'crescenta', a high and soft focaccia which is a much-loved favourite of the Bolognese people, which our Cesarina tops with cured ham.

For the first course, we have a typical Bolognese “minestra”: gramigna, a short fresh egg pasta, with a rich sausage sauce. For the second course, Mara serves a fabulous zucchini parmigiana, accompanied by a fresh seasonal salad. We finish off on a sweet note with chocolate salami, a fresh delicacy, made with crumbled cookies and dark chocolate.

Cesarina's Reviews

We has such a lovely dinner at Mara’s house in Bologna. We were looking for an authentic experience, and we sure got one! Would highly recommend for any foodies visiting the city.

Our customers says

"This was one our best experiences in Bologna. Our hosts, Gianni and Lorenza, were a well travelled and interesting couple about similar ages to ourselves. They also spoke perfect English, having lived in Canada for many years. Gianni taught us how to make tortellini from scratch which we ate with our meal. Gianni is a fine and the rest of the meal was excellent. Their place is an apartment in a medieval Palazzo which was well worth seeing on its own. We really enjoyed it."

"Our dinner with Angela was the best experience of our visit to Rome. The food was delicious, and it was delightful to talk with Angela and her Mother about food, life in Rome, work, and the state of the world in general. This experience would have been impossible for us without Le Cesarine."

"We had a wonderfull lunch time with Tania (30 minutes outside from Bologna). She was an excellent host and very charming. We enjoyed her traditional courses (antipasti, strozzapretti con salsiccia, brasato al limone) very much and could highly recommend her. The atmosphere was very relaxed and it was easy to drive to her. We would come again."
