Maddalena has always had a true passion for traditional Lombardo cooking. Between traditional recipes, books on typical dishes and cookery courses, this Cesarina also became a partner at a cooking school. With time, she became a true expert of Milanese gastronomy, even giving lectures on the subject at The University of the Third Age.

Today she welcomes us into her home in the centre of Milan, a stone’s throw away from the famous Quadrilatero della Moda and Porta Garibaldi. Milan’s main attractions, such as the Pinacoteca di Brera, La Scala and the Duomo al Castello Sforzesco are just a short walk from her appartment– or a metro ride, if you’re feeling a bit lazy. Maddalena’s house is basically the perfect place to start discovering the city.

I love teaching people about the secrets of Milanese cuisine – it’s a passion of mine that I dedicate a lot of free time to.

Do you fancy sampling an exquisite Milanese menu just a few minutes away from its famous Duomo? If you do, then pull up a seat at Maddalena’s table… This Cesarina has always loved her city’s cuisine, and she opens the Taste Experience opens with a delicious 'fitascetta'; a round bread topped with onions and cheese, which originates from the Como area, but is typically prepared in Milan.

Maddalena follows with Milanese-style creamed asparagus, a flavoursome first course that marries the delicate taste of the asparagus with broth and warm milk. For her second course, our Cesarina brings a wonderful salt cod pie to the table, and a side of green beans in a sauce with perfectly balanced sweet and sour flavours. This combination of fish and vegetables is a triumph.

The menu ends on a sweet note with Crema di Lario, a fresh and creamy dessert with a lemon base, made all the more delicious by a splash of liqueur.

Signora Maddalena was a lovely host and we had a nice evening with interesting conversations. The meal was delicious and a perfect introduction to the Milanese kitchen. It would have been nice to start the evening with an "aperitivo" and end it with a coffee.
