Le Cesarine

The culinary tradition of Valle del Crostolo

Vezzano sul Crostolo / Emilia Romagna

La Cesarina

Zoia, a Cesarina from Vezzano, in the province of Reggio Emilia, welcomes us in her beautiful home to let us discover the typical flavors of the local cuisine.

The cuisine of Reggio Emilia is a faithful mirror of a land rich in traditions and flavors. It is a gastronomy born of two authentic elements produced in a natural and simple environment. Zoia knows how to bring out the best from the products of her land, and she takes care of her farmyard animals with love.

The secret of the Cesarina
I take care of my farmyard animals with love.

  • Erbazzone, artisanal salami with fried gnocchi morsels and parmigiano reggiano with balsamic vinegar from Reggio Emilia
  • Green tortelli with butter and sage
  • Roast rabbit Reggio Emilia style with roast potatoes and a seasonal mixed green salad
  • Zuppa inglese and crostata

Refined selection of local wines

Zoia welcomes us to her home with the typical antipasti of the area: we start with 'erbazzone', a traditional savory cake served with parmigiano reggiano shavings and balsamic vinegar from Reggio Emilia, accompanied by fried gnocchi morsels and artisanal salami.

For the first course, our Cesarina serves homemade green tortelli seasoned with butter and sage. As a second course, we have a tasty roast rabbit cooked in the Reggio Emilia style with traditional balsamic vinegar from Reggio Emilia. This is served with two side dishes: roast potatoes and seasonal mixed green salad.

For a sweet finish, we have a classic homemade 'zuppa inglese' and a fragrant crostata pie, prepared according to an old family recipe.

Our customers says

"This was one our best experiences in Bologna. Our hosts, Gianni and Lorenza, were a well travelled and interesting couple about similar ages to ourselves. They also spoke perfect English, having lived in Canada for many years. Gianni taught us how to make tortellini from scratch which we ate with our meal. Gianni is a fine and the rest of the meal was excellent. Their place is an apartment in a medieval Palazzo which was well worth seeing on its own. We really enjoyed it."

"Our dinner with Angela was the best experience of our visit to Rome. The food was delicious, and it was delightful to talk with Angela and her Mother about food, life in Rome, work, and the state of the world in general. This experience would have been impossible for us without Le Cesarine."

"We had a wonderfull lunch time with Tania (30 minutes outside from Bologna). She was an excellent host and very charming. We enjoyed her traditional courses (antipasti, strozzapretti con salsiccia, brasato al limone) very much and could highly recommend her. The atmosphere was very relaxed and it was easy to drive to her. We would come again."
