Le Cesarine

The fruit of the plains, the freshness of the mountains

Carugo / Lombardia

La Cesarina

Paolo welcomes us at the foot of the rolling Alpine foothills, in a small town of Brianza. A region, she tells us, that is characterized by "its great variety of landscapes: from lake to mountain, rivers to plains," as well as its "great bounty of raw materials for the kitchen."

Our Cesarina knows it well, as her table is never missing the culinary elements characteristic of the area, "On my menu there are always meats and cheeses; minestrone, hot or cold; and all the recipes characteristic of the Milanese: risotto, polenta, pie..." Simply cuisine, in short - easy to prepare, hearty and nutritious.

The secret of the Cesarina
On my menu there are always meats and cheeses; minestrone, hot or cold; and all the recipes characteristic of the Milanese

  • Goat-cheese cream of Montevecchia on rice cakes with bresaola
  • Pumpkin and potato gnocchi with gorgonzola and walnut sauce
  • Pan-fried seasonal vegetables
  • Braised beef in red wine with mashed potatoes
  • Rice and milk pudding

Refined selection of local wines

The traditional Brianza flavor welcomes us in right from the appetizer. Paola serves rice cakes with bresaola, topped with a traditional goat's cheese cream of Montevecchia.

Up next are pumpkin and potato gnocchi with a gorgonzola and walnut sauce; this fresh pasta is stuffed with exquisite autumn vegetables, and then enriched by the decisive and intriguing flavour of traditional Lombard cheese. In this truly varied selection of flavours, the pefectly balanced flavours give us an irresistable dish.

For the second course, our Cesarina serves beef braised in red wine, a dish that brings out the flavour of the tender meat perfectly. This is served with a purée of potatoes and a side dish of pan-fried seasonal vegetables.

The meal ends with a creamy rice pudding - a fluffy and delicious dessert that leaves a fresh and simple flavour on the palate: the perfect finish.

Our customers says

"This was one our best experiences in Bologna. Our hosts, Gianni and Lorenza, were a well travelled and interesting couple about similar ages to ourselves. They also spoke perfect English, having lived in Canada for many years. Gianni taught us how to make tortellini from scratch which we ate with our meal. Gianni is a fine and the rest of the meal was excellent. Their place is an apartment in a medieval Palazzo which was well worth seeing on its own. We really enjoyed it."

"Our dinner with Angela was the best experience of our visit to Rome. The food was delicious, and it was delightful to talk with Angela and her Mother about food, life in Rome, work, and the state of the world in general. This experience would have been impossible for us without Le Cesarine."

"We had a wonderfull lunch time with Tania (30 minutes outside from Bologna). She was an excellent host and very charming. We enjoyed her traditional courses (antipasti, strozzapretti con salsiccia, brasato al limone) very much and could highly recommend her. The atmosphere was very relaxed and it was easy to drive to her. We would come again."
