Le Cesarine

When 'pappa al pomodoro' meets truffle oil

Firenze / Toscana

La Cesarina

Roberta is a lawyer, a mother, and - of course - a Cesarina! She is originally from Bologna, but is an honorary Florentine as she has lived there for over twenty years with her husband, thus becoming part of his florentine family. Her mother-in-law was a wonderful cook, taught her the secrets of the city’s cuisine, passing down her family recipes to Roberta.

Our Cesarina welcomes you into her spacious and welcoming apartment in the heart of Florence, just a few minutes’ walk from the Basilica di Santa Maria Novella and the banks of the river Arno. Her home is full of beautiful details and a mix of antique and modern furniture. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy the city’s world-famous cuisine.

The secret of the Cesarina

"For me, dinner time is a moment to connect with my family"

Crostini with poppa, nervetti and tomato
Pappa al pomodoro nobile (with truffle oil)
Picchiante (tender offal, mainly beef lung)
Roast potatoes with herbs
Ricotta cake

Refined selection of local wines

This menu is an homage to the Florentine culinary tradition. Roberta begins with a fabulous starter: typical Tuscan ‘crostini’, toasted bread topped with ‘poppa’ (cow’s udder), ‘nervetti’ (veal cartilage) and tomato. It’s a sophisticated flavour experience that is a perfect introduction to Florence’s ancient traditional cuisine.

For the first course, Roberta serves a typical Tuscan dish that is famous all over the world, pappa al pomodoro, a humble and flavoursome dish made with breadcrumbs and tomatoes. She adds an elegant touch with a drizzle of truffle oil.

The second course is sure to impress: Roberta serves an offal dish, 'Picchiante', made with tender ‘frattaglia’, principally beef lung. This is accompanied by crispy roast potatoes - delicious!

To finish on a sweet note, we have a divine ricotta cake.

Our customers says

"This was one our best experiences in Bologna. Our hosts, Gianni and Lorenza, were a well travelled and interesting couple about similar ages to ourselves. They also spoke perfect English, having lived in Canada for many years. Gianni taught us how to make tortellini from scratch which we ate with our meal. Gianni is a fine and the rest of the meal was excellent. Their place is an apartment in a medieval Palazzo which was well worth seeing on its own. We really enjoyed it."

"Our dinner with Angela was the best experience of our visit to Rome. The food was delicious, and it was delightful to talk with Angela and her Mother about food, life in Rome, work, and the state of the world in general. This experience would have been impossible for us without Le Cesarine."

"We had a wonderfull lunch time with Tania (30 minutes outside from Bologna). She was an excellent host and very charming. We enjoyed her traditional courses (antipasti, strozzapretti con salsiccia, brasato al limone) very much and could highly recommend her. The atmosphere was very relaxed and it was easy to drive to her. We would come again."
